The red and green flash in ammonite fossils are caused by the traces of aragonite in the shell.
Ammonites were predatory, squidlike creatures that lived inside coil-shaped shells. Ammonites first appeared about 240 million years ago and they went extinct with the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
